Information on Getting to My so-called Life IRC's
Have you ever been on IRC? Have you had a bad experience, or been hassled? Well we have a nice friendly channel for discussion of My so-called Life and the so-called mailing list. Nobody gets flamed, nobody gets shouted at, we just have a laugh and a good chat, over a cup of Tea if thats what you like :) If you want to go, but don't know the details, I have put them all on this page. If you have never been before but are interested, I hope you come, it's great fun, and it's very easy to get there. I have split this page into sections, so that people who know IRC don't need to wade through lots of information, and people who are new get everything they need to know. Don't be put off by how much information I give you, I'll probably give you too much, and really very little is necassary. It is very easy. And remember, we are all new to IRC at sometime.
When are the chats? There are three chats a week for the discussion of My so-called Life. Because of time zone differences the chats will start at different times for different people around the world. I have given some of these zones to make it easier for you to know what time it will be in your area.
There are three chats each week, the times of these are:
United Kingdon and Republic of Ireland (GMT): Friday 2 am Central Europe (CET): Friday 3 am Central Standard Time, U.S.A (CST): Thursday 8pm Eastern Standard Time, U.S.A (EST): Thursday 9pm
Sunday 2pm EST (EuroIRC) This IRC is also known as the EuroIRC. It was started becuase it is held at a better time for the European members of the list. Even though it is called the EuroIRC it is NOT just for Europeans, we get as many Americans and people from other countries as we do people from Euorpe.
United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (GMT): Sunday 7 pm Central Europe (CET): Sunday 8 pm Central Standard Time, U.S.A (CST): Sunday 1 pm Eastern Standard Time, U.S.A (EST): Sunday 2 pm
United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (GMT): Monday 12 am Central Europe (CET): Monday 1 am Central Standard Time, U.S.A (CST): Sunday 6 pm Eastern Standard Time, U.S.A (EST): Sunday 7 pm
Where do the chats take place? The chats take place in channel #Pikestreet on the dal.net servers. Some of these servers are:
U.S.A Canada Germany ===== ====== ======= skypoint.Dal.net toronto.on.ca.Dal.net Bielefeld.Dal.net glass.Dal.net uncc.Dal.net UK == defiant.Dal.net
For a bigger list of servers see:LIST OF SERVERS Although you can connect to any of these, I recommend the use of the American servers for everyone. If you want further information about this section, please see: SERVERS EXPLAINED
=================================================================What are these Servers? Servers are big computers, that feed smaller computers with information. So anything told to the server is sent to the smaller computers logged onto it.
Why do Dalnet have so many servers? Dalnet have lots of servers around the world, that are all joined togethere, to make a big network. By logging onto a Dalnet server in one country or state, you will be connected to all the other Dalnet servers in the world. The reason Dalnet have so many is so you can pick the closest server to you, to give you the fastest connection to their IRC network.
What is a "Net Split"? A net split is what happens when some of the Dalnet servers have a slow connection or get disconnected from the rest of the Dalnet network. For example: If I was on glass.dal.net and you were on uncc.dal.net and for some reason the connection between those two servers became broken, then we wouldn't be able to communicate any longer, similarly if the connection became slow, then messages would take longer to get between us than they did previously. That is known as a net split.
